I have recently used VocabularySpellingCity.com on my three boys who are ages 6, 8, and 13. So here is my honest and candid review:
What is VocabularySpellingCity.com ?
It is an online, web-based, learning tool for vocabulary, spelling, writing and language arts for levels K through 12.
Do I like it?
To sum it up real quick I really like this online tool as a supplement to teach my kids the English language. In the past three days, I found VocabularySpellingCity.com very helpful and interactive for my kids' Reading subject.
As a homeschooler, I am a stickler for making things simple but fun for the kids. All our text books come with a teacher/parent guide and to be honest I don't follow everything the guide book suggests even though I know full well that they are great suggestions. But really who has time to create, color and cut flash cards, picture charts and the like with four kids craving for your attention at the same time? Maybe if I had three house helps I could, but I don't. I'm every woman, it's all up to me.
Cutting to the chase, VocabularySpellingCity.com made it very easy for me to teach the kids vocabulary from their books. It made the flashcards for me, AND it automatically created the definitions! I particularly liked that I could create a list of words that we read for the day, just type those in, and save it as "Charlotte's Web" or "Narnia" according to the child's grade level, AND you can even print out the vocabulary list in Print, D'Nealian Manuscript, Cursive and even Sign Language for your kids to practice handwriting.
Pretty cool, huh?
You will be able to create upto 5 individual user accounts for your kids. When your child logs on, he will be able to access the lists of vocabulary you created according to his level.
The different word games to choose from are wonderful because the kids play and have fun without realizing that they are retaining the words you want them to learn.
If you are a multi-level homeschooler like me, it is advisable that you have a laptop or computer for each kid to be able to fully enjoy the benefits of using online tools such as VocabularySpellingCity.com, otherwise you will end up with kids fighting over who's turn it is. We have 3 laptops and two tablets at home, so it worked out quite well for us. My boys played side by side, laughing and learning from each other's mistakes. It has actually created a friendly competition among them.
I also think that the Premium Membership price of US $29.99 a year is very affordable even for someone like me who's on a tight budget. That's only 100 Philippine Pesos a month. I won't even notice that on my credit card.
I am currently on the 30-day trial of the Premium membership. I will continue my VocabularySpellingCity.com membership even after the trial since I find it a time- saver. I can imagine myself just saying "Ok kids, Spelling City Time!" and off they go to sit in front of their laptops. It's not just for Reading subject. I'm pretty sure I can integrate other subjects as well such as history, science and anything in English really!
The Verdict
Yes I recommend you try this out, specially if you're a busy mom (or dad) and can't be bothered to create all those arts and crafts visual aids for your kids. Give the VocabularySpellingCity.com 30-day trial a go. When you do try it out, do follow the instructions on the pop-ups. Take it from me, I closed them without bothering to read the instructions and got lost for a little bit. Enjoy!!!
