- I'm still an insurance adviser of life insurance and investment-linked products.
- I'm still a visa consultant for people wanting to travel or study to Australia.
- I'm still running the real estate family corporation and have been able to buy an investment under the corporation's name.
- I'm still selling natural and organic cosmetic products by Human Nature.
Now how do I say this without sounding like I'm full of myself:
That is what you call having multiple streams of income.
That's putting it very simply of course.
Going back to delegating, I would like to hire help outside of the family. Like hiring a regular accountant, a lawyer, a personal assistant and tutor for my kids. But there are violent reactions from the family (my mother to be exact). She says I'm being mayabang, hindi naman daw ako big time baket pa maga-accountant.
Well for starters I read about its importance. How can you become big time if you operate like a small time. Also people tend to get an accountant once they are in trouble with their finances ALREADY. And I don't want that. I want to set things straight while we're small. So this is my next move.
Homeschooling on real life scenarios
Right now my personal assistant in the office is my eldest 14 year old son, Cam. Since we are not yet officially homeschooling for the year, and by this I mean we are not yet enrolled and using textbooks, I offered Cam a job, more like on the job training as my assistant/secretary in the office. He accepted, yay. He goes to the office in Ayala to work Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 5pm. He takes the jeep or tricycle. I pay him allowance on the 15th and 30th of the month.
Well this will be a good project to submit come his portfolio assessments next year.
I'm gonna sound like a proud stage mother right now. But yeah I'm so proud of him, he now knows how to do the following things:
- Go the bank and process deposits and withdrawals.
- Get documents notarised, file taxes online
- Do administrative work in the office, check email, print, submit applications, do follow-ups.
- Sit in on meetings for me if I can't be there, I asked him to take notes, but being the techy (and maybe a bit lazy?) that he is, he decides to just record the whole meeting, I'll have to train him on how to do note-taking
- Talking to adults about insurance matters
- Follow instructions from other insurance advisers in the office
- Assist me when I have a client, get us coffee, snacks, papers etc.
I'm not yet decided if my son's work will continue once official homeschooling starts in November. I'll see if we can juggle work and academics because I see how much he is learning real life matters. I mean this is stuff that he will actually do when gets older, there is value in it.
Meanwhile my second son Colin is questioning why I didn't ask him to be my assistant in the office. I told him, I might get questioned for child labor since he's only 9 and not even 5 feet yet, and for safety reasons. His older brother on the other hand can pass for an 18 year old, he's now taller than me and can tackle and fight back if someone tries to grab things off him.
More Delegating
I could not do all these things without handyman around to support the activities that I do. He drives me and the kids when needed, makes sure the car is maintained and all the registrations are up to date, handles all the repair stuff in our house and rentals, takes care of errands like paying the bills that are due, carrying heavy equipment for me, fixing my environment so I can still do work at home comfortably.
He truly is handy to have around. There you have it, a handyman is an asset.
Imagine if I had to pay for all those services...with him it's all in one. He does wish for an allowance though... but he gets so much love from me and that's something money can't buy. (Big smiley)
Even the little ones have something to contribute. My three other kids ages 9, 7 and 4 do the cleaning up at home, they pick up their toys, tidy up, refill water bottles and such.
We still don't have a house help, but that would really be nice. We are managing without one so far.
What is the point of all this?
The point is having multiple streams of income was possible for me because I delegated things. I'm not saying be like me - start a corporation and be freelancer and an insurance adviser. I'm saying I learned from seminars and books that one of the ways to financial freedom is having multiple streams of income, passive income in particular. But it's easier said than done. Even more so when you have a lot of hands and you are able to duplicate yourself and be in many places at one given time.
